What each inventory status means

last updated: 2026-09-26

The nine statuses in the Inventory list, what puts a product in each one, and what to do about it.

Every product in Inventory has one status: a one-word answer to "do I need to do something about this?". By default the list is sorted by status, so what needs you comes first. You can filter by any status.

If a product fits more than one status, it shows the one highest in this list.

The statuses

Unknown We have not read this product's stock yet. It is normal right after installing and goes away after the first stock read, which happens by itself. What to do: nothing, wait for the read.

Out of stock Nothing available to sell. Products that allow selling when out of stock (backorders) are not counted here. What to do: check the dashboard. If it has sales, it is probably already in a recommendation.

Dead stock It has stock, it has existed for over 90 days, and it has not sold in the last 90 days. That is money sitting on a shelf, so it is kept out of the buying recommendations. What to do: consider a discount, a bundle, or discontinuing it.

Order now Its stock, plus what is already on order, is at or below its reorder point. If you wait, you risk running out before new stock arrives. What to do: order it. It is on the dashboard under its supplier.

Order soon The forecast suggests buying some, but you are not below the reorder point yet. The order-by date tells you how long you have. What to do: plan it; you can include it in the next order to that supplier.

New The product is less than 28 days old, or has no sales history the forecast can trust yet. What to do: nothing. If it has variants that already sell, we borrow their rate in the meantime.

In stock Enough stock, and nothing to order for now.

Untracked Shopify is not counting this product's stock (inventory tracking is off, like on most gift cards). With no quantity there is nothing to forecast, so it is left out of the dashboard and reports. What to do: if you do want to plan it, open the product and choose Start tracking inventory.

Ignored You told the app not to plan this product. It keeps its stock and history but never asks to be reordered. What to do: to plan it again, open the product and choose Stop ignoring.

The other columns

  • On hand — units available in Shopify, across all your locations.
  • Cover — how many days the current stock lasts at the current sales rate. It does not count units on order.
  • Per day — the sales rate. See How a forecast is calculated.
  • Class — A, B or C: how much of your sales this product carries. A products make up the first 80% of your revenue, B the next 15%, C the rest. Class A products get more safety stock.

Filters worth knowing

  • No supplier (in the supplier filter) shows products that are not assigned to anyone. Select them and use Assign to supplier.
  • No cost (in the cost filter) shows products without a unit cost in Shopify. Costs are needed for order values and the margin report.
